INEC:No routine military deployment 2027 election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Thursday rejected routine deployment of armed forces during elections, saying deployment should remain exceptional.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, who spoke through Director of Legal at Commission, Al-Hassan Umar, stated this at Army War College, Abuja while delivering keynote address at seminar.

According to INEC chairman, Constitution clearly defines roles of institutions involved in election management, arguing that Nigeria Police Force remains lead agency for election security.

"INEC is constitutionally mandated to organise, undertake and supervise elections, while Nigeria Police Force remains lead agency for election security under framework of Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security," he said.

"The role of Armed Forces is exceptional rather than routine. Their deployment arises only where prevailing security conditions require military support in aid of civil authorities and strictly in accordance with Constitution and other applicable laws."
