 WORLD HEPATITIS DAY 2026

Theme: Hepatitis: Let's Break It Down

Every year on 28th July, the world marks World Hepatitis Day to raise awareness about viral hepatitis,a silent but serious disease that attacks the liver and can lead to liver failure, liver cancer and death if left untreated.

The theme for this year, "Hepatitis: Let's Break It Down," calls on all of us to remove the barriers that prevent people from accessing accurate information, testing, vaccination, treatment and care.

Although hepatitis remains a major public health challenge, it is preventable and, in many cases, treatable. Safe and effective vaccines are available for Hepatitis B, while Hepatitis C can be cured with appropriate treatment. Early testing and prompt medical care save lives.


Know the Facts


Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C are spread mainly through contact with infected blood and certain body fluids. This may occur through:

Unsafe blood transfusions.

Sharing needles, syringes or other sharp objects.

Use of unsterilised instruments for tattoos or body piercings.

Transmission from an infected mother to her baby during childbirth.

Unprotected sexual contact with an infected person (Hepatitis B).

Hepatitis is NOT spread through hugging, shaking hands, sharing food or drinks, coughing, or other everyday casual contact.


What You Should Do


Get tested for Hepatitis B and C, especially if you are at risk.

Ensure newborn babies receive the Hepatitis B vaccine within the first 24 hours of birth and complete all recommended doses.

Learn the facts and educate your family and community on how hepatitis is transmitted and prevented.

Avoid sharing needles, razors and other sharp objects, and always insist on safe medical practices.

Show love and support to people living with hepatitis. Stigma discourages people from seeking testing and treatment.

Breaking down barriers begins with knowledge. By replacing myths with facts, encouraging early testing, promoting vaccination and supporting those affected, we can reduce the burden of hepatitis in our communities.

Together, let us break down the barriers of ignorance, stigma and poor access to healthcare. ,
