 BREAKING NEWS: Minor Earth Tremor Recorded in Abuja as Minister Orders NGSA to Closely Monitor Situation, Submit Hourly Reports


A minor earth tremor has been recorded in parts of Abuja, prompting the Federal Government to direct the Nigerian Geological Survey Agency (NGSA) to closely monitor the situation and provide hourly reports.


The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, issued the directive after the NGSA confirmed that the tremor occurred at about 11:23 a.m. on Tuesday.


According to the agency, the tremor originated at a depth of approximately one kilometre beneath the ground and propagated over a distance of about four kilometres within five seconds.


The NGSA said the event was of low intensity, measuring between Mercalli Intensity I and II, indicating that it was too weak to cause structural damage or pose any significant threat to lives and property.


Minister Alake reassured residents of the Federal Capital Territory that there was no cause for panic, adding that relevant government agencies were closely monitoring the situation to ensure public safety.


Experts noted that although Nigeria is not located in a major earthquake zone, minor earth tremors have occasionally been recorded in states including Abuja, Kaduna, Kogi, Oyo and Bayelsa, making continuous monitoring necessary.
