BREAKING:Defence Minister Hails Tinubu's Approval of Up to 80% Salary Increase for Armed Forces


 

Abuja, Nigeria – The Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving a salary increase of between 30 and 80 percent for personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces, describing the decision as a landmark step toward strengthening national security.


In a statement issued on Wednesday by his Special Assistant on Media, Leah Katung-Babatunde, the minister described the salary review as a historic intervention that will significantly improve the welfare and morale of military personnel. He noted that the enhanced remuneration would further strengthen the Armed Forces' capacity to combat terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, oil theft, and other security challenges across the country.


According to the minister, the increase in the annual personnel budget from ₦660 billion to ₦924 billion reflects the Federal Government's commitment to recognizing the sacrifices and dedication of military personnel, particularly those serving on the frontlines.


Musa stated that the improved salary package would help reduce the financial burden on officers and soldiers, enabling them to remain focused on their constitutional responsibility of defending the nation's territorial integrity and protecting citizens.


He assured President Tinubu and Nigerians that the Armed Forces would reciprocate the government's support with greater professionalism, discipline, and unwavering commitment to national security.


The Defence Minister also urged all military personnel to view the salary increase as a renewed call to duty, emphasizing the need for continued dedication in safeguarding lives and restoring peace across the country.


He further reaffirmed the Ministry of Defence's commitment to modernizing military equipment, enhancing operational capabilities, and improving the overall welfare of service personnel and their families.


President Tinubu announced the new salary structure on Tuesday. The review, which takes effect from September 1, 2026, is expected to benefit approximately 250,000 personnel serving in the Nigerian Army, Navy, and Air Force.
