FEDERAL GOVERNMENT INAUGURATES INTER MINISTERIAL COMMITTEE TO STRENGTHEN NAQS AND BOOST AGRICULTURAL EXPORTS.

 


The Federal Government inaugurated an Inter ministerial Committee on the Nigeria Agricultural Quarantine Service (NAQS) to strengthen the nation's agricultural biosecurity system, improve the operational capacity of the Service, and enhance Nigeria's agricultural exports in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda. The Committee was inaugurated in Abuja by the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, Dr. Deborah O. N. Odoh, on behalf of the Honourable Minister, Senator Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, CON.




Speaking at the inauguration, Dr. Odoh said the Committee would help address institutional bottlenecks, strengthen compliance with international sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) standards, and position Nigeria to compete more effectively in global agricultural markets. She urged members to carry out their assignment with diligence, noting that their recommendations would contribute to improved food security, increased farmers' incomes, and sustainable economic growth.







The Comptroller General of NAQS, Dr. Vincent Isegbe, described the Service as Nigeria's first line of defence against transboundary plant, animal, and aquatic pests and diseases. He emphasized that strengthening NAQS would reduce the rejection of Nigerian agricultural exports, improve foreign exchange earnings, and reinforce Nigeria's reputation as a reliable exporter of safe, quality agricultural products. The Director of Economic Growth, Federal Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, Mr. Auwal Mohammed, also underscored the importance of inter-agency collaboration in protecting the nation's agricultural resources and facilitating international trade.


The Committee comprises representatives from key government ministries, regulatory agencies, the Nigeria Customs Service, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, the Nigerian National Accreditation System, the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), farmers' associations, and other stakeholders. It is expected to develop practical recommendations to strengthen NAQS.
